Time to cancel your AmEx Gold Rewards Business Card

Remember that great deal that I told you about last year, where you could get a free plane ticket or $250 just for signing for an American Express Gold Rewards Business Card? Well, it's been about year since that deal started and now it's time for most of us to go ahead and cancel that card.

Why? Well, the card came with a free year of membership, but starting about now you're going to be billed $125 per year just for the 'privilege' of carrying that gold card around. So go ahead and call the number on the back of your card in order to cancel your membership (make sure that you have redeemed your rewards points online before closing the card though!).

Chances are that you will be offered either 5,000 or 10,000 membership points if you choose to keep your account open. Figuring that each point is roughly equivalent to $.01, that's $50 or $100. This may be an attractive offer to you, but seeing as the yearly fee is still higher than either option I chose to go ahead and cancel the card (I wasn't using it anyways—there are better rewards cards out there without yearly fees).
